Build
your own AV Convergence Box
Much of the functionality
found in the digital AV convergence devices can be easily added to a
standard computer – but perhaps that is not the point. What these
devices offer is a simplified user interface and streamlined
software. They are meant to be used like appliances, not computers.
Input, operation, footprint, noise, etc have all been optimized for
AV
operations.
Of course, there is no reason you can’t simply
attach a computer to your AV system. With the right hardware and
software you could easily have a system that matches the
functionality of any PVR or audio jukebox. In the end, it may end
more expensive to build your own but it will be more flexible.
Important Factors when building your
AV Convergence Device
-
Footprint: How large is
the device? Will it fit in your stereo rack?
-
Noise: Fans, hard drives, CDROM’s etc all
make noise
-
Cooling: Most likely, you will need plenty
of ventilation for a PC.
-
TV Tuner: Look for something with PVR
functionality
-
TV Output: Your video card needs to work
well with a TV
-
Case Room: A Micro-ATX case or even mini may
not offer you the ability to incorporate all the cards you will
need. Video, TV Tuner(s), Sound, Firewire, etc. Hint: Get a
DVD/CDRW combination drive!
-
Control: Don’t forget you will need a
wireless keyboard and mouse or other pointing device.
